How I Time Box My Day

How do I structure my day? I get asked this question a lot. I’m married, father of four, work a full time job, and volunteer at my church. Someone once told me I am like a duck on the water. Things look calm but under the surface, I’m constantly moving.

Here is how I structure my day.

4:45 AM – Wake up, get dressed, brush teeth, go to the gym (4 times per week.)

5:00 AM – 6:30: Workout and shower.

6:40: Head back home to feed and water my chickens (I have 6 hens) then drive to work.

7:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Work.

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Lunch. I use this time to eat, read, play sports, or go for a run if the weather is nice.

1:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Finish the workday.

4:15 PM: Head home.

4:30-9:00 PM: Family time with a few exceptions throughout the week. I’ll fit in appointments, my wife has a weekly girls night with friends, spend one on one time with each kid, see friends…etc but I always make time for my family everyday – no exceptions.

10:30 PM: Bed.

On the weekends, I make every effort to be with my family. I make sure every Sunday night we have dinner with our extended family. In-laws, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and even great grandparents all get together for dinner and time to hangout.

Of course this schedule won’t work for everyone but for me and this season of life, it works.

I encourage all of you to make good use of every minute you have. Budget your time no differently than you budget your money. Have purpose but leave time for fun. Most importantly, make time for what is most important.
